Question of the Week #4

Why do you think that here in North America we seem to be either completely unaware or unsympathetic to the rest of the world's problems? What has caused this?

I think that we are unsympathetic because we are selfish and we don't really care. When something happens closer to home however, we would care more.

I think we are unsympathetic or unaware to the rest of the world's problems because either it has nothing to do with us or it does not concern us. One reason I dont know much about whats going on in the world is because I dont watch the news. So for me its not that I am unsympathetic it's just I am unaware.

I think we are unaware and unsympathetic becuase we have never had to live the way other countries do, this goes back to previous question about taking things fo granted. Many of us feel that the worlds problems will never affect our country, so why should be concern ourselfs with their problems. However it should affect our lives. It isnt fair for one country to be living in complete peace, then another country being torn apart. Perhaps we should be able to learn about the worlds hardships at a younger age so we can truely understand how lucky we are. If kids see a lot of adults taking action, maybe they will too.

We decide to turn a blind eye becuase it doesn't concern us. If it doesn't effect us, then we don't care. We're very selfish and we can be rude when it comes to that.
I honestly don't know why we're like that. We just are.

I think we are unsympathetic or unaware because we don't really know or aren't educated enough to know what's actually happening. We don't live in the environment that others have to deal with. We don't have to live with these problems so it really doesn't concern us unless we make ourselves aware of it.

Probably because we would rather not here about anyone elses problems. Not even our own really.A lot of people still have trouble facing their own problems. We'd rather leave all the misfortune out of our hands and have someone else deal with it. I would say society itself has caused this, maybe if our country did enough other countries would follow.

I think that we are unaware more so then unsympathetic. Alot of us are to young to do anything and it's not like anyone, or very few of us in New Brunswick don't know the extent of the issues in other countries. We have never had to live without water or clothes or education so we just take it for granted, but we do care. We maybe don't care as much as we should, or do as much as we can but without question I care and want to help the people in other countries, I just have to put it into action.

i think that we are unsympathetic or unaware becausethe problems are so far away. we think that because its so far away it will have no effect on us. for me im not so much unsympathetic as unaware, i dont watch the news so i dont know what is going on.

I agree, i believe we seem unaware or unsympathetic because its not close enough to us to really feel we are in danger or care to the extent that others do. Its sad that we dont, when they are in need of help

I think a lot of the time we ignore things that we should be taking action on because were be busy or whatever it maybe. I don't think its right to just stand by in different cases an watch as people get kill an do nothing about

I think that we are unsympathetic because, we are so unaware of what its like to live without, or to live in a country where everything is not as sugar coated, and as cushioned as it is here. We for sure take things for granted, and that probably leads to the assumption that unsympathetic... However I believe that we have no reason to be unaware... With so many media outlets, we really have no reason to turn a blind eye to whats going on.

I think we are unsympathetic because it isnt close to were we live and we have become wrapped up in our own lifes that we have stopped caring.

i think that we are unsympathetic and unware because we never had to live the way other countries do, and if it doesnt effect us then we dont do anything about it.

I think we care but we don't help because if we help one country out we would seem as the bad guy for not helping them all out.

I think its not that people are completely unaware, but that it doesn't seem real. We cant imagine how horrible it is for other people in other countries so we just don't. We don't think some of these things happen when they do. When something happens close to us its such a shock when really it goes on everyday. If more people chose to keep in check with the news and such, we might be more aware.

That is true Brittany but i think there is more to it then that, yes there is free rights but there is also rights to people's religion an the way they live an there is a lot to think about before just going right into helping people we have to see if they do kind a want are help even at all we have to make sure they are 100% with us on it.
The last thing i think anyone would want is to have them looking to us thinking we want to change everything in there country, its really something for the people an what they want here.
I believe that something should be done however i don't think that all of us just because we do nothing are unsympathetic, i knows its not the case we care but we have to just go about things the right way.
I do know that some people are unaware but maybe if they had there eyes open it would help to see that this is going on in a country an its wrong everyone should have there rights as people to pick no matter what country they come from things change with time and i think this is what the people needed was a new open door for them all.

I think that us North Americans seem unaware or unsympathetic because we really don't understand the crisis that's occuring. We're so used to peace that we can't even imagine what it's like. We think that because those countries are so far away that it won't affect us.

It's not that we don't care or dot want to do anything, it's that our life, jobs, commitments, etc are very fast paced. We don't have, or, it is dfficult to make the time to reflect and truly understand what is happening around the world. Another thing is that few of us have experienced such disaster or atrocities that occur worldwide - it is hard to relate when we have not experienced.

I feel that the reason why we seem uncaring is because its so far away, half the time and a different race of people, also our problems are often different from theirs. we don't know as a nation what its truly like to be poor. its not that we don't care its we don't understand. We cannot Empathize those happenings for the majority. its not that we dont care its we just don't know. we don't have those problems so we don't really know how to fix them. We sympathize and feel sorry for them. but we still can't all commit suicide over it, because theres nothing we can do.
